“How many days do I need in Morocco?” is the first question worth answering, because it determines everything else. Get it wrong and you either spend your holiday in a vehicle or leave the country having seen one city. This page sets out what each trip length genuinely buys, with the driving distances that decide it.
The short answer
- Under 4 days: one city plus day trips. No deep Sahara.
- 4–6 days: one city plus the Sahara, or two cities one-way.
- 7–10 days: the main circuit — Marrakech, the desert, Fes and the north.
- 12–15 days: the circuit plus a second region, and two nights almost everywhere.
The single most useful thing to know: Marrakech to Merzouga is roughly 530–560 km, about nine and a half hours of driving each way. Almost every bad Morocco itinerary ignores that number.
Every length, and what it actually covers
| Days | What fits | What does not |
|---|---|---|
| 1–2 | Marrakech medina, or one day trip — Agafay, Ourika, a balloon flight | Any real desert |
| 3 | Marrakech plus a Merzouga or Erg Chegaga run, or three day trips | Fes; the coast and the desert together |
| 4 | One city day plus a 3-day desert route | Fes; two desert nights |
| 6 | Fes to Marrakech one-way through the Sahara, or a Marrakech loop plus the coast | The full imperial circuit; both deserts |
| 7 | The same, with more depth — or the northern cities without the desert | Desert and the complete north together |
| 10 | The full loop: Marrakech, Sahara, Fes, Chefchaouen, Rabat, Casablanca | The Atlantic south; a mountain trek |
| 12 | The loop plus one extra region — the coast, a second erg, or the High Atlas | Agadir and the Anti-Atlas; Toubkal |
| 14 | The grand tour, Casablanca to Marrakech, two nights at most stops | The Atlantic south; both ergs |
| 15 | All of the above, plus either the Atlantic south, the High Atlas, or a slower pace | The far south and Western Sahara |
Read the one that matches your dates
- 3 days in Morocco from Marrakech — three honest options, and why the Sahara needs all three days.
- 4 days in Morocco — Merzouga, Zagora, or no deep desert at all.
- 6 days in Morocco — the one-way crossing, the loop, or the quiet south.
- 7 days in Morocco — three routes, compared on driving time.
- 10 days in Morocco — the full circuit, day by day.
- 12 days in Morocco — the circuit plus two spare days, used well.
- 14 days in Morocco — the grand tour from Casablanca to Marrakech.
- 15 days in Morocco — what the extra days are actually for.
The distances that decide your plan
| Leg | Distance | Driving time |
|---|---|---|
| Marrakech → Merzouga (Erg Chebbi) | 530–560 km | about 9½ hours |
| Marrakech → Zagora | about 350 km | about 6 hours |
| Marrakech → Fes (motorway) | about 520 km | about 5¼ hours |
| Fes → Chefchaouen | about 195 km | about 3½ hours |
| Marrakech → Essaouira | about 176 km | about 2½ hours |
| Marrakech → Ait Ben Haddou | about 171 km | about 3 hours |
| Marrakech → Imlil | about 103 km | about 2 hours |
| Marrakech → Agafay | about 30 km | 45–60 minutes |
Four rules that apply at every length
- The Sahara is not a day trip. Three days to Merzouga or Erg Chegaga, two to Zagora. Anything shorter is nineteen hours of driving for one evening on a dune.
- Fes and the desert do not combine below six days, and only then if the route runs one way rather than looping back.
- The coast and the desert are opposite directions. Below ten days, pick one.
- Fewer stops, longer at each. The main fatigue on a Morocco trip is changing accommodation every night, not the sightseeing.
Choosing by what you came for
| If your priority is… | Minimum days | Shape |
|---|---|---|
| Sahara dunes and a desert camp | 4 | Marrakech + 3-day desert route |
| Two great medinas | 6 | One-way Fes to Marrakech |
| Imperial cities and history | 10 | The full loop via Rabat and Casablanca |
| Mountains and walking | 5–6 | Marrakech base plus two or three nights at Imlil |
| Coast and a slower pace | 5 | Marrakech plus two nights in Essaouira |
| Seeing the whole country | 14 | Casablanca to Marrakech grand tour |
How our tours are organised
To be straightforward about it: the routes we run as set departures with their own pages are the 2-day Zagora tour, the 3-day Merzouga tour, the 3-day Erg Chegaga tour, the 6-day Fes to Marrakech tour and the 9-day Morocco itinerary, alongside our day trips from Marrakech.
The 4, 7, 10, 12, 14 and 15-day routes on this page we arrange as private tours built around your dates rather than fixed departures — which is usually what travellers on those lengths want anyway, because at ten days and beyond the right route depends heavily on your airports, your pace and what you actually care about.
Before you book anything
- Best time to visit the Moroccan Sahara — month by month, with real temperatures.
- Merzouga vs Zagora vs Erg Chegaga — which desert suits the days you have.
- What a night in a desert camp is really like.
- What to pack for the Sahara.
- Things to do in Fes and how to visit Chefchaouen.
Frequently asked questions
How many days do you need in Morocco?
Seven to ten for a first visit that includes the Sahara and more than one city. Four is the minimum that reaches the desert. Fourteen is the length at which nothing feels rushed.
Is 5 days enough for Morocco?
Yes for one city plus a desert route, or one city plus the coast and the mountains. Not for Fes as well.
What is the minimum for a Sahara trip?
Two days to Zagora, three to Merzouga or Erg Chegaga. A one-day Sahara trip from Marrakech is not a real option.
Is it better to base yourself in one city or move around?
Under five days, base yourself in Marrakech and take day trips. Beyond that, moving earns its keep — provided you are not changing hotel every single night.
