An Ourika Valley day trip from Marrakech is the easiest mountain escape from the city. The valley starts about an hour south. A river runs through it. Berber villages climb the hillsides on either side.
Furthermore, it is the coolest option in high summer. You leave after breakfast and stand beside running water by mid-morning. Then you are back in Marrakech for dinner.
Just about an hour’s drive from Marrakech, Ourika Valley is one of the most accessible and beautiful getaways in the Moroccan Atlas Mountains. The valley is famous for its lush green landscapes, flowing rivers, and traditional Berber villages that seem frozen in time.
As you travel through the valley, you’ll see terraced fields, red clay houses clinging to the hillsides, and the snow-capped peaks of the High Atlas in the distance. The cool mountain air is a refreshing escape from the heat of the city.
One of the highlights is a visit to Setti Fatma, a charming village known for its cascading waterfalls – perfect for a short hike and stunning photos. Along the way, you can stop for mint tea in a riverside café, shop for local crafts, or visit a Berber family home for a truly authentic experience.
Why the Ourika Valley day trip from Marrakech is the easiest escape
The Ourika Valley starts about an hour’s drive south of Marrakech and climbs gently into the High Atlas along a river. That proximity is the point: you can leave the city after breakfast, stand beside running water in the mountains by mid-morning, and be back for dinner. In July and August, when Marrakech is punishing, the valley is noticeably cooler.
The road follows the Ourika river past terraced gardens, red clay villages built into the hillsides and roadside cafés with tables actually in the stream. The end of the paved road is Setti Fatma, where a path leads up to a series of seven small cascades.
About the Setti Fatma waterfalls
Be realistic about this part. Reaching the first waterfall takes roughly thirty to forty minutes of scrambling over boulders and across the stream on stepping stones, and it is uneven ground in ordinary shoes. The second and third are harder again, and the full set of seven is a proper half-day hike that is not part of this tour.
Most visitors go to the first cascade and stop there, which is entirely sensible. If you would rather not climb at all, the valley floor, the villages and a long lunch by the river make a complete day on their own. Nobody is pushed.
Ourika, Imlil or the Three Valleys?
These three day trips go into the same mountains and suit different people. Ourika is the shortest drive, the greenest and the easiest — the best choice with children or on a tight schedule. Imlil is higher, quieter and more dramatic, at the foot of Mount Toubkal, and feels more like real mountains. The Three Valleys tour covers more ground in a day and includes a homemade lunch in a village.
Our guide to the Ourika Valley describes the valley in more detail, and our honest comparison of day trips from Marrakech puts all of them side by side, including the Ouzoud waterfalls if water is what you came for.
A note on the 2023 earthquake
The Ourika valley sits in Al Haouz province, where the earthquake of 8 September 2023 did most of its damage — but the worst of it fell further west, around Ighil, Asni and the Toubkal valleys, rather than here. Ourika came off comparatively lightly, and there is a reconstruction project in the valley using traditional building methods built to anti-seismic standards.
You may still see rebuilding along the road. Official figures put more than 54,000 homes completed across the affected provinces by March 2026, with a few thousand more under construction, and the authorities said in 2025 that over 90 per cent of the destroyed buildings in Al Haouz had been rebuilt. Progress has been uneven, though: in the more isolated villages near the epicentre some families are still in temporary housing three years on.
We mention it because travellers ask, and because a page about Berber mountain villages that said nothing would be pretending. The practical position is straightforward: the roads are open and the villages are working. And mountain tourism is a significant part of what these valleys live on — what a visitor spends on tea, on lunch and on a guide stays in the valley. That is the honest case for coming.
