Agafay desert quad biking works because of the ground. Agafay is stony and firm, not soft sand. So the bikes grip, and the open hills give you room to ride.
Want the camel ride and dinner as well? Our Agafay desert package combines a guided quad ride, about an hour on camelback and a Moroccan dinner with a show. One evening, one transfer, one booking.
The desert sits about 30 kilometres from Marrakech. That is roughly an hour each way. Therefore the whole trip fits into half a day, and you still get back for dinner.

What Agafay desert quad biking is actually like
Agafay is about 30 kilometres and an hour from Marrakech — a stony, semi-arid desert of dry hills, hard pale ground and dry riverbeds, with the High Atlas on the skyline. That surface is why quad biking works here: it is firm, open and mostly flat, with enough rolling ground to be interesting and almost no soft sand to bog you down.
The ride is guided from start to finish. You get a safety briefing and a practice loop before you go anywhere, and the guide sets the pace and the route. Helmets, gloves and goggles are provided. No previous experience is needed — the controls are a thumb throttle and a brake, and most people are comfortable within five minutes.
When to go, and what to wear
Late afternoon is the best slot and it is what we recommend. The light turns gold over the hills, the temperature drops, and the Atlas sharpens behind the ridge. Morning rides are fine too, and in high summer they are more comfortable than the middle of the day.
Wear closed shoes, long sleeves and clothes you do not mind getting dusty, because you will. Sunglasses sit badly under goggles, so leave them in the vehicle. If you wear contact lenses, bring your glasses as a backup — fine dust and contacts are a poor combination.
Quad, camel, or the real Sahara?
Three different days out. A quad is the adrenaline version and covers far more ground. Our camel trek in the same desert is the quiet version, led at walking pace, and better for photographs and for children. Neither is the Sahara proper: Agafay has no large sand dunes, and the golden dunes in Morocco photographs are Erg Chebbi at Merzouga, nine and a half hours south.
Our Agafay vs Merzouga comparison explains the difference without selling you either, our guide to the Agafay desert covers what else is out there, and our notes on doing Agafay on a budget are worth reading first. If you want an engine and a bigger landscape, the motorcycle routes guide covers the serious roads.
Agafay desert is not just a direction but it is a dream to the tourists from all over the world. As you tear through the desert, the thrill of the ride combines with the stunning natural surroundings, offering a one-of-a-kind adventure. Feel the wind in your face as you race across the desert’s vast openness, with the golden sands and rugged landscape stretching out in every direction. The adrenaline rush is matched only by the breathtaking beauty of the Agafay Desert, providing the perfect blend of excitement and tranquility.
