A desert trip from Marrakech costs from €22 for a half-day in Agafay, €85 per person for two days to Zagora, and €110 per person for three days to Merzouga on a shared departure. Private multi-day tours start around €450. Budget roughly 30 to 50 per cent on top of the headline price for lunches, monument entries and tips, which almost no operator includes.
Those are our own published prices, not estimates. Below is what sits inside them, what does not, and how to read a cheaper quote from someone else.
The price ladder, tour by tour
| Trip | Length | Price | Basis |
|---|---|---|---|
| Agafay camel ride | ~1 hour | €22 | per person |
| Agafay quad biking | ~2 hours | €25 | per person |
| Agafay evening: quad, camel and dinner | 5 hours | €75 | per person |
| Zagora | 2 days | €85 | per person, shared |
| Merzouga | 3 days | €110 | per person, shared |
| Erg Chegaga | 3 days | €495 | per person, private |
| Merzouga, with a free desert day | 4 days | €550 | per person, private |
| Marrakech to Fes via the Sahara | 5 days | €690 | per person, private |
| Sahara and the imperial cities | 7 days | €1,090 | per person, private |
| The grand circuit, slower | 15 days | €2,290 | per person, private |
The pattern worth noticing: the jump from €110 to €550 is not four days of extra luxury. It is the difference between a seat on a shared minibus and a vehicle that belongs to your party. We set that out properly in our comparison of shared and private desert tours.
What the headline price includes
On our multi-day desert tours the price covers transport in a private or shared air-conditioned vehicle with a professional driver, accommodation at every overnight stop, dinner at the desert camp and at the overnight stops where stated, breakfast each morning, and the camel trek into the dunes.
Read any quote for those six items specifically. A cheap tour that excludes dinners is not cheap.
What it does not include — and what that adds
- Lunches. Taken at roadside restaurants, paid as you go.
- Monument and site entrance fees. Ait Ben Haddou, the Marrakech palaces, the Hassan II Mosque interior in Casablanca. We leave these out on purpose rather than build an estimate into the price.
- Drinks beyond what is served with included meals.
- Tips for the driver, guides and camp staff. Optional, and genuinely appreciated.
- Flights, international or domestic.
- Personal expenses, souvenirs and optional activities.
We deliberately do not publish a figure for meals or tipping. Restaurant prices vary by where you stop and tipping is a personal decision, and we would rather quote you numbers we can stand behind than pad an article with invented averages. Ask us when you enquire and we will tell you what travellers on that specific route actually spend.
Why the cheapest tours are cheap
When we last compared the market in October 2026, shared three-day Marrakech–Merzouga tours were listed anywhere from about €90 to €199, and Agafay packages bundling a quad ride, a camel ride and a dinner show were selling from around €12. Those low prices are real. They are achieved in identifiable ways:
- Volume. A full sixteen-seat minibus spreads the fuel and driver cost very thin.
- Basic camps. Shared tents, shared bathrooms, simple food.
- Commission-funded shopping stops. The pottery workshop and the carpet cooperative are not on the itinerary for your benefit.
- Exclusions. The camel trek, or dinner, quoted as an extra once you arrive.
None of that is fraud, and for a traveller on a tight budget a €90 tour that delivers a camp night is good value. But if two quotes differ by half, the difference is in that list, not in generosity.
How payment works
There is no card payment on this website. For a day trip, nothing is paid in advance and you settle on the day. For a multi-day tour, a deposit confirms the booking and the balance is paid during the trip. Nothing is reserved until we confirm it to you in writing, and every hotel, riad and camp is named in that confirmation before any money changes hands.
One structural point in your favour: booking direct means no platform commission. A tour listed at €110 on a booking platform is typically handing over 20 to 30 per cent of that, so the operator nets closer to €80. Booking with the operator puts that margin into the trip rather than the platform.
Common questions
How much should I budget in total for a 3-day desert tour?
Start from the €110 tour price, then add lunches for three days, entrance fees at the sites you choose to enter, drinks and tips. Most travellers land meaningfully above the headline figure. Ask us for a realistic all-in number for your dates and we will give you one.
Is a more expensive desert tour better?
Up to a point. Paying more buys a smaller group, a better camp and a fourth day. Beyond that you are mostly buying tent fittings. Our honest view is that spending the extra money on an additional day improves a desert trip more than upgrading the tent does.
Can I pay in euros or do I need dirhams?
Tell us what suits you when you book and we will confirm the arrangement in writing. Carry some dirhams regardless for lunches, entrance fees and tips, which are local cash transactions.
Which desert gives the best value?
Agafay, if you measure value as experience per euro and per hour — an hour from the city, from €22. Merzouga, if you want the dunes people picture. The three ergs are compared in Merzouga vs Zagora vs Erg Chegaga, and what a camp night is actually like covers what you get for the money once you arrive.
