3-Day Erg Chigaga Desert Tour from Marrakech

3 Days

This Erg Chegaga desert tour goes to the remoter of Morocco’s two great ergs. No paved road reaches it. Instead the final stretch runs off-road across open desert from M’Hamid.

That is the whole point. At Chegaga you rarely see another camp or another vehicle. However, the 4×4 crossing is rough in places, so read the FAQs below before you book.

Discover the untamed beauty of Morocco’s deep south on this private 3-day Sahara desert tour from Marrakech to Erg Chegaga. Designed for travelers seeking authenticity and adventure, this tour takes you far off the tourist path—through dramatic mountain passes, lush palm valleys, and into the heart of the wild Sahara.

Your journey begins with a scenic drive through the High Atlas Mountains, passing Berber villages and panoramic viewpoints along the Tizi n’Tichka Pass. You’ll explore the ancient Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site, before continuing through Ouarzazate and the breathtaking Draa Valley. End your first day in the quiet town of Agdez, where you’ll stay in a peaceful guesthouse nestled among palm groves.

On Day 2, the adventure continues toward the edge of the desert. After a visit to Tamgroute and its traditional pottery workshops, you’ll arrive at M’Hamid, where paved roads give way to vast desert landscapes. Journey off-road through the Sacred Oasis to reach the towering dunes of Erg Chegaga, one of Morocco’s most remote and untouched dune fields. Enjoy a sunset camel ride and spend the night in a desert camp, with dinner and traditional Berber music under the stars.

The final day takes you across the dry salt flats of Lake Iriqui, through the desert outpost of Foum Zguid, and into the Anti-Atlas Mountains. After lunch in Taznakht, known for its Berber carpets, you’ll return to Marrakech by evening.

This private desert tour is ideal for couples, families, or small groups looking to experience the real Sahara in comfort and style—away from the crowds of Merzouga. With private 4×4 transport, knowledgeable guides, and authentic accommodations, it’s a perfect balance of cultural discovery and desert adventure.

Chegaga or Chebbi? They are not the same desert

Morocco has two great ergs and travellers routinely book one thinking it is the other. Erg Chegaga is the larger and far more remote: a wide field of dunes with no paved road to it at all, reached off-road from M’Hamid across open desert. Erg Chebbi at Merzouga is more accessible, has a paved road to its edge and many more camps, and is where most Morocco desert photographs are taken.

The practical consequence is quiet. At Chegaga you are much less likely to see another camp, another vehicle or another group. The price of that is the 4×4 crossing, which is rough in places — part of the appeal for some people and the drawback for others. If you want emptiness, this is the trip. If you want the easier road and the taller, more photographed dunes, take our 3-day Merzouga tour or the 4-day version with two desert nights instead.

Our Merzouga vs Zagora vs Erg Chegaga comparison sets all three side by side, and our guide to the Marrakech to Chegaga route covers this journey in detail.

What makes this Erg Chegaga desert tour different

Two things no other tour we run includes. Tamegroute, where the zaouia library holds centuries-old manuscripts and the potters still work in the green glaze the town is known for. And the Lake Iriqui crossing on the final day — a dry salt flat, once a lake, now a vast pale plain you drive straight across.

The Draa Valley on day one is also one of the longest palm oases in Morocco, and it is a different landscape entirely from the Dades and Todra route that the Merzouga tours take. You see the south-west of the country rather than the south-east.

Before you book

Read our month-by-month guide to the best time to visit the Moroccan Sahara first — this route is at its hardest in high summer. The Sahara packing list matters here more than on the shorter trips, and what a night in a desert camp is actually like answers the practical questions. If you are weighing up how many days to give Morocco overall, our guide to how many days you need is the place to start.

Erg Chegaga, the largest and most remote dune field in Morocco, lies deep in the Sahara where silence reigns and golden sands stretch endlessly toward the horizon. Far less visited than Erg Chebbi, its wild beauty offers an authentic glimpse into the untouched spirit of the desert — a place where time slows, stars burn brighter, and the wind shapes the dunes into living art.

Your 3-day Erg Chegaga desert tour from Marrakech begins with a scenic drive across the High Atlas Mountains, winding through dramatic valleys and ancient Berber villages. Along the way, explore the legendary Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou and the lush Draa Valley, dotted with palm groves and centuries-old ksours.

As you venture deeper into the Sahara by 4×4 and camel, the dunes of Erg Chegaga rise before you in breathtaking silence. Spend your evenings in authentic Berber camps, savoring traditional meals by the fire and gazing at a sky overflowing with stars.

This journey is more than an escape — it’s a soulful encounter with Morocco’s wild heart, where adventure and serenity meet in the timeless beauty of Erg Chegaga.
