Agafay Desert Camel Trek Experience.

1 Hour

An Agafay desert camel ride gives you an hour of desert without losing a travel day. Agafay sits about 30 kilometres from Marrakech. That is roughly an hour each way.

Want the quad bike and dinner as well? Our Agafay desert package puts the camel ride, a guided quad ride and a Moroccan dinner with a show into one evening. The two rides on their own come to €47. The package is €75, and the difference buys you the dinner and the show, plus one transfer instead of two.

We run it before sunset on purpose. At midday the light is flat and the heat is real. However, in the last hour the stone hills turn gold, then pink. Meanwhile the High Atlas sharpens behind the ridge.

Agafay Desert, located just outside Marrakech, offers a unique desert experience that contrasts with the typical sand dunes of Morocco’s other deserts. This stony, semi-arid landscape is dotted with rocky outcrops and dry riverbeds, creating an almost lunar-like scenery. Camel riding here before sunset is an unforgettable adventure. As the day winds down, the warm golden hues of the setting sun paint the sky in shades of orange and pink. The camels’ steady movements across the arid terrain, combined with the gentle desert breeze, create a peaceful and almost surreal atmosphere. The fading light casts long shadows over the rugged landscape, making the desert feel even more vast and tranquil. It’s a moment of quiet reflection as the day ends in one of Morocco’s most striking, yet lesser-known, desert landscapes.

Agafay is not a sand desert, and that matters

Set expectations before you book. Agafay is a stony, semi-arid desert about 30 kilometres and an hour from Marrakech — dry hills, rock and hard pale ground, with the High Atlas on the skyline behind. It is sometimes called a desert of stone. There are no large sand dunes here, and the photographs of golden dunes you have seen of Morocco are almost certainly Erg Chebbi at Merzouga, nine and a half hours south.

What Agafay gives you instead is proximity. You can leave Marrakech in the afternoon, ride a camel across open desert as the light goes, and be back for dinner in the city. For a traveller with two or three days in Marrakech, that is a genuine desert hour that costs no travel days at all.

Why we time the Agafay desert camel ride for late afternoon

We run this before sunset on purpose. In the middle of the day the Agafay light is flat and the heat is real; in the last hour before dusk the hills turn gold and then pink, the temperature drops, and the Atlas stands out sharply behind the ridge. It is a completely different place at 6pm than at noon.

The ride itself is about an hour, led on foot by an experienced camel handler. No riding experience is needed — the camel is led, it walks, and the whole thing is slow by design. Getting on and off is the only awkward part and the handlers do it dozens of times a day.

Agafay or the real Sahara?

Be clear with yourself about which you want. If you want dunes, take the 3-day Merzouga tour or the 4-day version with two desert nights, or the shorter 2-day Zagora trip. If you want an hour of desert without losing days to the road, Agafay is the honest answer, and our Agafay vs Merzouga comparison sets the two side by side without selling you either.

If you would rather have an engine than a camel, we also run quad biking in the same desert. Our guide to the Agafay desert covers what else is out there, and our notes on doing Agafay on a budget are worth a look before you book anything.

Riding a camel through the Agafay Desert before sunset offers a serene and unforgettable experience. As the golden light begins to fade, the vast, rocky landscape transforms into a sea of warm colors. The rhythmic sway of the camel and the peaceful silence of the desert create a sense of timelessness. The sky shifts through shades of orange and pink, and the cool evening breeze sweeps across the sand, making for a tranquil and magical journey as the sun dips below the horizon.
