An Ouzoud Waterfalls day trip is the greenest day out of Marrakech. The falls drop around 110 metres into a river gorge. Wild monkeys live in the olive groves above them. Lunch comes with a view of the water.
The drive takes about two and a half hours each way. Therefore you leave early and return in the evening. Because the valley sits higher than the city, it also feels noticeably cooler.
Full-Day Trip to Ouzoud Waterfalls from Marrakech – Overview
Escape from Marrakech’s city heat and noise on a refreshing full-day journey to the Ouzoud Waterfalls, one of Morocco’s most stunning natural wonders. Located about 150 km (around 3 hours) northeast of Marrakech in the Atlas Mountains, Ouzoud offers a tranquil retreat filled with natural beauty, light adventure, and cultural charm.
What the Ouzoud Waterfalls day trip actually involves
Ouzoud is about 150 kilometres north-east of Marrakech, roughly two and a half to three hours each way on good road through olive country and the foothills of the Middle Atlas. The falls themselves drop around 110 metres in several stages into a green gorge on the El Abid river.
The walk down to the base is on a stepped path through olive groves and takes twenty to thirty minutes at an easy pace. It is the way back up that people underestimate: the same steps, in the afternoon heat. There is no obligation to go all the way down — the upper viewpoints are the best photographs anyway — and we go at whatever pace suits you.
The monkeys are real, and they are wild
The Barbary macaques in the olive groves above the falls are genuinely wild animals, not an attraction. They are used to people and they are quite bold. Do not feed them, do not try to touch them, and keep bags closed. Watching them is the best part of the walk; getting bitten is not.
Who this suits, and what else to consider
It suits families, anyone travelling in the heat of summer who wants altitude and water, and anyone who has already done a desert trip and wants something green. It does not suit you if you want a long hike — this is a walk, not a trek.
Our complete Ouzoud Waterfalls guide covers the site itself in detail, including when the water is highest. If you are choosing between the options out of Marrakech, our honest comparison of the best day trips from Marrakech puts Ouzoud next to the Ourika Valley, Imlil and the Three Valleys and says plainly which is better for what.
When to go, and what the water does
The falls run all year but they are not the same all year. Spring, roughly March to May, is the peak — snowmelt from the Middle Atlas is still feeding the El Abid river and the cascade is at its widest and loudest. By late summer the flow is thinner and the pools are warmer, which some people prefer. Autumn is the quiet compromise, with good water and fewer visitors.
Mornings are better than afternoons for two reasons: the light falls into the gorge rather than across it, and the coach groups tend to arrive from midday onwards. We leave Marrakech early for exactly that reason.
One safety note we would rather state than omit: the rocks near the base are wet and genuinely slippery, and the pools have currents in spring. Swimming is possible in the calmer pools in summer but it is not supervised, and we would not recommend it when the river is high.
A full-day trip to Ouzoud Waterfalls from Marrakech offers a refreshing escape from the city’s heat. Located 150 km away, the waterfalls cascade down 110 meters in a lush valley. The tour includes a scenic 2.5–3 hour drive, with stops for photos of the landscape. You’ll enjoy a guided hike to the base of the falls, where you can spot Barbary macaques and take a boat ride close to the water (optional). A traditional Moroccan lunch is provided at a restaurant with views of the falls. Afterward, you’ll have free time to relax, explore, or take more photos. The return trip to Marrakech ends around 7:00 PM. It’s a family-friendly experience, ideal in spring or autumn, with light hiking, wildlife sightings, and beautiful nature.
