What the drive is like, and what the day gives you
Essaouira is about 176 kilometres west of Marrakech, roughly two and a half hours each way on a good road through the argan groves — argan grows almost nowhere else on earth, and you will see goats in the trees on the way. That drive is the shortest of any full-day trip we run to somewhere genuinely different, which is why Essaouira works even on a tight schedule.
The medina has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2001. It was laid out in the eighteenth century under Sultan Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdallah on the principles of the French military engineer Vauban, which is why it is the one Moroccan old town built on a grid — wide, straight, walkable, and almost impossible to get lost in. After the Marrakech medina, that comes as a relief.
How to spend your Essaouira day trip from Marrakech
Three things are worth your day. The ramparts along the Skala de la Ville, where the cannons still point out to sea and the Atlantic comes straight in. The fishing port, best in the late morning when the boats unload and the gulls go mad — this is a working harbour, not a display. And the beach, a long windy arc south of the town; Essaouira is one of the best kitesurfing spots in North Africa precisely because the wind never stops.
A word on that wind. Essaouira is nicknamed the Windy City of Africa for good reason. It is what makes the summer bearable and the kitesurfing excellent, and it is also why you should bring a layer even in August. People who arrive in beachwear expecting the Mediterranean are usually surprised.
Who this suits
Anyone who wants a day out of the heat, anyone travelling with teenagers, and anyone who has had enough of souks for a while. Seafood at the port is the obvious lunch and it is not included, deliberately — you pick your own fish by weight at the stalls, which is half the fun.
