Full Day Trip To Imlil

1 Day

An Imlil day trip from Marrakech takes you to the end of the road. Imlil sits at about 1,740 metres. Beyond the village there are only mule tracks. Mount Toubkal, the highest peak in North Africa, stands at the head of the valley.

The drive takes about two hours each way. Consequently you get most of the day in the mountains. You walk as much or as little as you like.

Take a leisurely stroll through Imlil and experience the Berber culture firsthand. Your guide will lead you on a tour of the village, explaining the traditional way of life of the Berber people who have inhabited the area for centuries. Visit local houses, small shops, and enjoy the hospitality of the villagers with a cup of freshly brewed mint tea in a traditional Berber home.

If you prefer a lighter experience, you can take a gentle walk along the village trails, enjoying the stunning vistas of the High Atlas peaks, valleys, and terraced fields.

Where the Imlil day trip from Marrakech actually goes

Imlil sits at about 1,740 metres in the Mizane valley, roughly 65 kilometres and two hours south of Marrakech, and it is the end of the paved road. Beyond it there are only mule tracks. That is why it is the staging post for Mount Toubkal, which at 4,167 metres is the highest peak in North Africa and in the Arab world.

You will not climb Toubkal on a day trip — that is a two-day ascent with a mountain guide and a night at the refuge, and we will quote it separately if you want it. What a day gives you is the valley: walnut groves, terraced fields stacked up the slopes, irrigation channels still running the way they have for centuries, and the peak itself on the skyline.

How much walking, and how hard

As much or as little as you want. The standard walk is a gentle couple of hours on village paths and mule tracks to the Kasbah of Ait Souka and the hamlets above Imlil — uneven underfoot, some gradient, no exposure and nothing technical. Walking shoes are enough; boots are better. If anyone in your party would rather not walk, the village, the tea and the views work perfectly well without it.

The altitude is worth knowing about rather than worrying about. At 1,740 metres the air is thinner and noticeably cooler than Marrakech — bring a layer even in summer, and expect snow on the high ground between December and March.

Imlil, Ourika or the Three Valleys?

All three go into the High Atlas and they are not interchangeable. Imlil is the highest and quietest, and the one that feels like real mountains. The Ourika Valley is closer, greener and easier, with water and villages rather than peaks. The Three Valleys tour covers more ground and includes a homemade lunch in a mountain village.

Our full-day guide to Imlil describes the valley in more detail, and our honest comparison of day trips from Marrakech puts every option side by side. If the mountains are the reason you came, note that our 14-day grand tour and 15-day tour both include a night at Imlil rather than a day visit.

A note on the 2023 earthquake

Imlil and the villages around it were badly damaged on 8 September 2023, when a magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck Al Haouz province with its epicentre near Ighil, about 73 kilometres south-west of Marrakech. Asni, which you pass through on the way up, lost roughly nine out of ten of its houses.

You will see the evidence on the drive and in the valley: new block-and-concrete houses beside older earth-built ones, villages rebuilt from scratch, and in places work still going on. Official figures put more than 54,000 homes completed across the affected provinces by March 2026, with a few thousand more under construction, and the authorities said in 2025 that over 90 per cent of the destroyed buildings in Al Haouz had been rebuilt. Progress has been uneven, though: in the more isolated villages near the epicentre some families are still in temporary housing three years on.

We mention it because travellers ask, and because a page about Berber mountain villages that said nothing would be pretending. The practical position is straightforward: the roads are open and the villages are working. And mountain tourism is a significant part of what these valleys live on — what a visitor spends on tea, on lunch and on a guide stays in the valley. That is the honest case for coming.
