Yes, if you are short on time. Agafay sits about 30 km from Marrakech — roughly an hour — so you get emptiness, silence and a sunset without losing two travel days. No, if you came to Morocco for the sand dunes in the photographs. Agafay is a stony desert of dry hills and hard pale ground. It has no dunes at all.
Almost every disappointed review of Agafay comes from that one misunderstanding. Get it right before you book and it is one of the best-value evenings near Marrakech.
What Agafay actually looks like
Picture pale, rounded hills and dry riverbeds, hard underfoot, with almost no vegetation and the High Atlas standing along the horizon behind. The light at the end of the day turns all of it gold, which is why every camp out there builds its programme around sunset.
What it is not is a sand sea. The golden dunes people picture are Erg Chebbi at Merzouga, nine and a half hours south of Marrakech. Agafay is sometimes marketed as the stone desert or the Marrakech desert, and both are fair. “The Sahara, 45 minutes from Marrakech” is not.
Who Agafay is genuinely worth it for
- Anyone with two or three days in Marrakech. You cannot reach the real Sahara and return — the arithmetic is in can you visit the Sahara from Marrakech in one day? Agafay is the only desert that fits.
- Families. A short transfer, no nine-hour drive, and anyone who has had enough can be back at the hotel within the hour.
- People who want the silence rather than the scenery. Agafay delivers emptiness extremely well. Twenty minutes out of the vehicle and there is no sound at all.
- First or last evening travellers. It works as an arrival-day activity when you are too tired for a medina, and as a last night before an early flight.
- Anyone who has already done Merzouga. Different landscape, no expectations to disappoint.
Who should skip it
- If the dunes are the reason you came to Morocco. Agafay will feel like a consolation prize. Give the Sahara the days it needs instead.
- If you have already seen stony desert elsewhere — the American southwest, inland Spain, parts of Jordan. Agafay will not surprise you.
- In the middle of a summer day. There is no shade. Go at the end of the afternoon or not at all.
If you are weighing the two deserts properly rather than deciding whether Agafay alone is worth it, Agafay vs Merzouga sets them side by side.
Is it worth staying overnight in Agafay?
It depends what you want from the night. The camps out there range from simple tents to genuinely luxurious ones with pools, and a night buys you the two best hours of the day at both ends: sunset and sunrise, with the hills empty in between.
Our honest view, and we will say it even though we do not currently sell an Agafay overnight: for most visitors an evening is enough. Agafay is forty-five minutes away, so unlike Merzouga there is no travel argument for sleeping there. You are paying for the night itself, not for access. If the night is the point — a special occasion, a desert sky without a long drive — it is worth it. If you simply want to see Agafay, come at five and go home at ten.
And if a desert night is what you are really after, a night in a camp at Erg Chebbi is a different order of experience, because the silence comes with dunes around it.
How far is Agafay, and how long do you need?
About 30 km south-west of Marrakech, which is 45 to 60 minutes by road depending on traffic leaving the city. The route runs past Lalla Takerkoust and the ground turns to dry stone surprisingly quickly — the city is behind you within twenty minutes.
For time: an hour on camelback plus transfers is a half day. Quad biking plus a camel ride plus dinner is about five hours door to door. There is no version of Agafay that needs a full day.
What it costs
| Option | Length | Prix |
|---|---|---|
| Camel ride at sunset | about 1 hour | €22 per person |
| Quad biking across the hills | about 2 hours | €25 per person |
| Quad, camel and dinner with a show | 5 hours | €75 per person |
One piece of arithmetic worth doing yourself: the camel ride and the quad ride bought separately come to €47. The combined evening is €75. The €28 difference buys the dinner, the show, and one transfer instead of two. Whether that is worth it depends on whether you want the evening or just the activity.

Common questions
Verrai-je des dunes de sable à l'Agafay ?
No. Agafay is a stony, semi-arid desert of dry hills and hard ground. The big golden dunes are at Merzouga, about nine and a half hours south. Any listing showing tall sand dunes on an Agafay page is using the wrong photograph.
How far is Agafay from Marrakech?
Around 30 km, roughly 45 to 60 minutes by road each way.
Can you visit Agafay in one day?
Comfortably — and in less. A camel ride with transfers is a half day; the full evening with quad biking and dinner is about five hours. Most people go in the late afternoon and are back in Marrakech by around ten.
Is Agafay better than the Sahara?
No, and it is not trying to be. It is nearer. That is the entire trade: Agafay costs you an evening, Merzouga costs you three days minimum. If you have the days, go south. If you do not, Agafay is a genuine desert evening rather than a substitute for one.
What is the best time of day to go?
Late afternoon into evening, all year. There is no shade in Agafay and the middle of a summer day is unpleasant. The programmes are built around sunset for good reason.
Comment faut-il s'habiller ?
Closed shoes, long sleeves and clothes you do not mind getting dusty, particularly if you are quad biking. Bring a layer for after dark: the temperature drops quickly once the sun is down, even in summer.
Our verdict
Agafay is worth visiting if you arrive knowing what it is: an hour from Marrakech, genuinely empty, beautiful at the end of the day, and made of stone rather than sand. Judged as a convenient desert evening it is excellent. Judged as a substitute for the Sahara it will disappoint you, and no amount of marketing photography changes that.
We run the full Agafay evening ourselves — quad ride, an hour on camelback at sunset, dinner at a camp with music and a show — and we will tell you to book the Sahara instead if your dates allow it. If you are still weighing options, our honest comparison of day trips from Marrakech covers the Atlas valleys and the waterfalls too.
