4-Day Sahara Desert Tour from Marrakech to Merzouga

4 jours

The three-day version of this trip works, but it asks you to drive 530 kilometres to the dunes, sleep once, and drive back. The fourth day is what changes it. You get two nights in the desert and a full day at Merzouga with nothing to do but be there — which is the part people actually remember.

Why four days is the honest minimum

Marrakech to Merzouga is roughly 530 to 560 km and takes around nine and a half hours of driving. There is no way to shorten that; the road crosses the High Atlas at the Tizi n’Tichka pass at about 2,260 m and then runs east along the pre-Saharan valleys. On a three-day tour that distance is covered twice in three days, which leaves one evening and one sunrise in the dunes. On four days we break the outbound journey at the Dades Valley, reach the camp on the second evening, and keep the third day entirely for the desert.

What you see on the way

Aït Ben Haddou, the fortified village on the old caravan route to Timbuktu, is a UNESCO World Heritage site and the first proper stop. Then Ouarzazate, the Dades Valley with its red gorges and its switchback road, and the Todra Gorge, where the limestone walls rise around 400 m and the final stretch narrows to about ten metres across. From Tinghir the landscape dries out through Erfoud and Rissani until the first dune of Erg Chebbi appears.

The two desert nights

You reach Merzouga in the late afternoon and ride by camel into the erg for sunset, arriving at camp for dinner and the night. The next day is yours: sunrise over the dunes, then the option of the Gnawa village at Khamlia, a visit to nomad families still living on the edge of the erg, the Rissani market area, or a 4×4 run further into the sand. A second night follows — and a second night is the difference between having seen the Sahara and having spent time in it.

Day four is the long drive home: an early start, the Draa side of the route, the Tichka pass again, and Marrakech by evening. We are upfront that it is a long day in the car. If you would rather not repeat it, the one-way alternative is our 6-day Fes to Marrakech route, which crosses the country instead of looping.

Who this suits

People with four to five days in Morocco who want the real dunes rather than the nearer ones. If you have less time, compare the 3-day Merzouga tour or, for a desert within two hours of Marrakech, Agafay. Our Merzouga vs Zagora vs Erg Chegaga comparison explains which erg is which, and the 4-day Morocco itinerary guide sets out what else four days could buy you.
