One is a stony plateau about 30&nbsp;km from the city, reachable in under an hour. The other is a sea of sand dunes roughly 530&ndash;560&nbsp;km away, on the far side of the High Atlas. Choosing between them is really a choice about how much of your holiday you are willing to spend in a vehicle.<\/p>\n<h2>The short answer<\/h2>\n<p>If you have <strong>one afternoon or one night<\/strong>, go to Agafay. If you have <strong>three days<\/strong> and the Sahara is the reason you came to Morocco, go to Merzouga. There is very little sand. What it has instead is an open, lunar landscape of white and ochre hills with the snow line of the High Atlas on the horizon, and that horizon is the whole point: at sunset the hills shift from beige to gold to purple, and you can be back at your riad for a late drink.<\/p>\n<p>It works because of proximity, not scale. A <a href='https:\/\/moroccosaharaspirit.com\/fr\/trip\/camel-ride-in-agafay-desert\/'>camel ride in Agafay<\/a> is a one-hour experience in real countryside rather than an expedition, and <a href='https:\/\/moroccosaharaspirit.com\/fr\/trip\/quad-biking-adventure-in-agafay-desert\/'>quad biking across the Agafay plateau<\/a> is genuinely better on hard ground than it would be on soft dunes. If you are in Marrakech for three nights and the Sahara is out of reach, Agafay is not a consolation prize &mdash; it is the correct choice for the time you have.<\/p>\n<p>What Agafay is not: dunes. If you have seen photographs of a camel silhouetted on a knife-edge ridge of orange sand, those were taken at Erg Chebbi or Erg Chegaga, not here.<\/p>\n<h2>What Merzouga actually is<\/h2>\n<p>Merzouga is the village at the edge of Erg Chebbi, the dune field that most people picture when they say &ldquo;Sahara&rdquo;. Getting there means a full day of driving each way over the Tizi n&#8217;Tichka pass, past <a href='https:\/\/moroccosaharaspirit.com\/fr\/trip\/ait-ben-haddou-full-day-trip-from-marrakech\/'>A\u00eft Ben Haddou<\/a> and through the gorges. That drive is not dead time &mdash; it is a large part of what you are paying for &mdash; but it is unavoidable.<\/p>\n<p>The reward is the part Agafay cannot deliver: a camel trek into the dunes at dusk, a night in a camp with no light pollution, and sunrise from the top of a dune. Two or fewer: Agafay. Three or more: Merzouga or Chegaga.
